Williams tells the tale of that institution known today as SUNY Maritime College. The story begins during the age of sail when disaster and mutiny created a new demand for trained mariners. In response, in 1873, New York State established a nautical school under the auspices of the New York City Board of Education. Originally based aboard the square-rigged sloop-of-war St. Mary's, the school taught boys to run the rigging, tie knots, holystone the decks, and navigate on yearly cruises across the Atlantic. In its beginning in the 19th century, the school was constantly confused for a reformatory where "bad boys were made good." Because of its cost, it was seen as a symbol of government waste, and its opponents repeatedly tried to shut it down. But despite the criticisms, the school survived and its tough training practices created generations of gallant sea officers who led the American merchant fleet into the modern world. In 1938, after a bruising political battle with Robert Moses, the school came ashore at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx. In the following decades, it continued its tradition of training sea officers as a college within the State University of New York. Four Years Before the Mast is a narrative history of a unique institution that offers anecdotes from the 19th to 21st centuries revealing the harrowing existence of life at sea, death in the high Arctic, daring rescues of foundered ships, U-Boat attacks, and heroism on 9/11.

I purchased this book for my Dad, who graduated in 1936 from the then-New York State Merchant Marine Academy (NYSMMA), or, as he refers to it "the Brooklyn Reform School." He is still hale and hearty at 101 and remembers everything with crystal clarity. When the book arrived, he started reading it right away and called me to say what a wonderful gift it was. He said in reading it he started recalling incidents and pranks that he and his friends had pulled on board the Hog Islander SS Empire State, which was the school's training ship back then. While I've not yet read the book myself, his testimony as to its value stands very high on the recommendation list.Product details

Congratulations Mr. Williams. I really enjoyed your book, especially since my daughter, Jennifer Barnes Hayes, graduated from Maritime in 1980. Many people mentioned in the book were familiar to me, also some of the anecdotes. Every university should have a history book of its own. I'm glad you tackled Martime's history. I guess politics and connections are important in most endeavours, certainly in the academic world.

Historic, nostalgic and well written insight into the dynamic personalities, cultures and challenges from the early St Mary Schoolship days through the 21st century SUNY Maritime College ... really enjoyed the book and my daughter wants to read it ... maybe she'll find some relevant insight for my expectations during her upbringing ... just maybe -)
This is a one-of-a-kind book with the history of two centuries of nautical training development for young men who want to go to sea. It will appeal particularly to graduates and friends of the Maritime College of the State of New York because it chronicles the political and financial fights to create one of the outstanding land-based and shipboard teaching institutions in the State University System .Author Joe Williams has combined the narrative of sea-going cadets and officers to enliven the history and provide a very human experience ,of over two hundred years, for today's young men and women wanting to make a career of a life in the maritime world.
BEING A GRADUATE OF THE MARITIME COLLEGE, I FOUND THE BOOK TO VERY INTERESTING AND EXCEPTIONALLY WELL WRITTEN....VERY ENLIGHTENING RE THE EARLIER AND FORMATIVE YEARS OF THE COLLEGE. THE NARRATIVE OF THE LATER YEARS COULD HAVE BENEFITTED FROM MORE DILLIGENT FACT CHECKING AND THE USE OF MULTIPLE SOURCES. NONE-THE-LESS, A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORICAL RECORD.

Good coverage of the early years of the New York Nautical School. I enjoyed the insight into the politics of keeping the school in operation and finding a land base at Fort Schuyler. The Admiral Miller and Brown years are covered as well but with less detail, especially as we come up to more recent administrations. Still well worth the read if you attended Maritime or want to know more about the history behind "The Dome"
As a graduate I learned more about my school and the dedicated people who kept it alive. Their sacrifice and zeal should serve as models for all of us who have reaped the benefits of their perserverence. Even today the school is challenged since it does not fit the "cookie cutter" mold of SUNY. Our graduates are world wide and rose to the challenge of international expansion of US companies during the last half of the 20th century. This history is long overdue and congratulations to the unheralded archivist most notably Philomena Magavaro who embodied the true character of all the school from "one of her boys". SUNY @ Fort Schuyler does not receive the recognition it deserves. This college prepares students for a key industry which America has decided it was more expedient, and profitable, to abandon. Britannia stopped ruling the waves ... and declined. Hello, USA ! (if you're wondering or even caring).
